What does classic mean to you? For me, it means a black and white outfit, a sleek bun, and bold red lips.
I was in a retro mood (yet again) for this spring look. Clean updo, big bright earrings, and even bigger black shades work so well with this marled herringbone jacket.
As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I love marled textures and had been searching for the perfect herringbone short coat. Why? Pieces like these make such great transitional outerwear — or “inbetweenies” haha. With a black and white weave, these coats are not too dark to wear in spring and not too bright to wear in fall.
I was lucky to have found this specific coat from H&M, on sale for half price (regular $79.99 down to $40). I normally wear a size 4 or 6 at H&M but I wanted a more boxy look with this coat, so I went a few sizes up to an 8.
What I like most about this marled coat is that there is no lapel to worry about, as a lapel can really make or break a good coat or jacket. Instead, this coat features a shawl collar for a clean, streamlined look around the neckline and all the way down the front.
The same can be said for buttons, as too many of those (or not the right kind) can easily make a coat look overdone. However the single button on this coat helps maintain a relaxed but sophisticated look.
This short coat has become outerwear of choice for work and the weekend because it goes with everything, it can make my outfit look professional or laid back, and it just feels so cozy to live in.
For this outfit, I decided to go for a mix between the weekend look with the cuffed white jeans and relaxed grey tank top, and the office look with the black leather Steve Madden loafers.
To top it off, I’m wearing my prized eyewear possession: these Versace cat eye sunglasses. My mom purchased these during one of our trips to Las Vegas (she has such great taste) and she recently handed them down to me. I’ve always loved these sunglasses because I find them so unique and so classy — they’re the perfect hybrid between classic and modern.
