A major part of my style has changed completely in the last year and a bit. I used to always be an open-neckline kind of girl. V-necks shirts, especially, were my power tops. But for me, open-neck shirts, no matter how much I liked how I looked in them, had become high-maintenance.
You see, I have two 3/4-inch-wide hypertrophic scars on my chest. I’ve had them since I was 13 and people who know me know they’re there and they’re a part of me.
Because of this, I’m now at a point where I won’t buy a top or dress unless it’s got a high neckline. And to be honest, that’s fine as it’s created balance in my closet and opened me up to a whole new world of styles that I otherwise wouldn’t have ventured into if not for an easy, low-maintenance way to keep my scars covered up. Some of my favourite outfits, especially my most recent post from Old Montréal, feature beautiful high-neck pieces.
Sure I still miss wearing low-cut tops and I’ll still rock them from time to time. But until my scars are no longer distracting to others and myself, high-neck tops will continue to be my main jam.
Around the time I had decided this, I found this cute striped top at Forever 21 for just $9.90. Not only did I love its simple, high-neck cut, but I loved the thin straps and overall casual feel.
It’s got a bit of a crop to it, too, which makes it perfect for high-waisted bottoms. And, of course, a relaxed fit, which provides some extra room if you know you’re wearing this to an eating date.
Thanks for reading this post! I have to say it feels therapeutic to share a bit more about myself and how my experiences relate to my style. I know I love reading about my fellow bloggers and what influences their own unique styles.
How about you? How has your style changed over the years? What factors led to that shift? Let me know in the comments below!
