Summer has historically been a pain in my ass. I am not friends with the heat and being a sweaty, melty mess is just not my thang.
But this summer, I wanted to try embracing the warm weather a bit more and I knew just a few new wardrobe additions would help give me a different outlook on the season. I think because I’m just a naturally inelegant person, it’s easy for me to look frump-a-dump in basic tank tops and denim shorts. So in order to look presentable during the hot summer months, I have to elevate my outfit game just a tad.
That’s why I hit up Le Château for some new summer clothes that could serve me for both office and casual wear.
I was immediately drawn to this white / magenta floral crêpe pencil skirt because it gave off such Miranda Kerr vibes. It creates a nice silhouette and is lightweight without being sheer. For work, you could wear it with anything, but I like to wear it with a solid black or white blouse and patent pointed heels. For a casual look, I’ve worn this to the theatre with a black V-neck three-quarter-sleeve top and black faux-suede mules. See, versatile!
I also love that the band around the waist is a solid black. It’s a small detail that adds a touch of sophistication. The skirt wouldn’t be the same without it.
So, have I been enjoying the summer so far? Yes, k, fine, I’ll admit that knowing exactly what clothes to reach for in this heat does help with summer sucking less. But finishing June immersed in the music I love has also contributed to that. As a jazz enthusiast, I was spoiled this past week by my friend Liam who got me into three shows during the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The Concert Hall in the old Masonic Temple building has reopened and it was such a treat to take in some high-quality live jazz at the storied venue. So yeah, maybe you can say I’m a little more jazzed about summer, haaah! 😜 Please don’t PUNish me. Sorry, I can’t stop.
The first show I caught was so surreal. Donny McCaslin Group had accompanied David Bowie on his final album Blackstar, and now having seen the group live, that partnership makes total sense. The stunning colours of sound they emitted on stage just engulfed me. To honour the late Bowie, they played Lazarus and sent chills down my spine:

If you want to hear the soundtrack of my heart, big band jazz is it. On my second night, the John LaBarbera Big Band dedicated an evening to the sounds of Buddy Rich. Here’s the moment I just wanted to find a fella to slow dance with:

On my final night, Bokanté brought the house down. Vibrant, heavy energy filled The Concert Hall and the crowd was loving it. Especially this special moment:
