When it comes to dating, you know you really care about someone when you want to spend your Saturday with them. I like to call that Primetime Saturday. But when it comes to friendship and spending the day with someone who means the world to me, I like to go ahead and call it a Saturdate.
Yesterday, my best friend Shayla and I had an adventure-filled day in Toronto. Shayla often spends her weekends out of town, visiting her boyfriend or her family. So when she is in town for the weekend, I’m honoured when she wants to spend some of it with me — and we really make the most of our day!
On this Saturdate, we did it classic Jes and Shayla style: no intense planning, no rushing, just going with what we feel.
We started our day catching up over lunch at my favourite Italian restaurant, Cibo Wine Bar, on King Street West. Shayla was excited by the numerous gluten-free options, so she went with a beef carpaccio salad and refreshing cocktail. When I asked if she remembered what the drink was called for the purpose of this blog post, she said, “It was like a strawberry Tom Collins kinda thing but that’s not what the name was.” Either way, it was tasty and you can trust her on that. I had a lemon ricotta cheesecake for lunch because I had leftover chicken wings at home for breakfast because why not?
Here’s the dealio: I’m pretty anti-patio. I don’t see the point in eating outside. But it was a beautiful day with the perfect temperature out, and the big-ass umbrella over our heads kept us nice and shaded. Plus, Shay is a pretty special gal to me and she loves patios and I like seeing her happy. Shayla also wanted to point out that she felt like we looked like fancy French ladies, with our big shades and cute yet relaxed outfits. Details on those at the bottom of this post!
Next we decided to hit up the Toronto Islands, thanks to this blogTO post telling us it was OK and that the recent flooding hadn’t shut down the Islands entirely. So we hopped on an exhilarating water taxi ride and, as you can see in the GIFs below, I was stoked. After living in the city for many years, it was my first time visiting the Toronto Islands!
Look at this beaut ^
We went for a lovely stroll along the Ward’s Island boardwalk. Gasp, are those suspenders? No, it’s just my backpack, silly. But now I kinda wish I had been rockin’ the Larry King look 🤔
Shayla treated herself to a massive mint chocolate chip ice cream cone at the quaint Island Cafe, where we talked about what we were like as kids. Shayla was the outgoing little girl who said “peace be with you” and shook the hands of everyone in her row at church. I was the shy kid who sat in the corner at gatherings and said “ughhh, get me outta this hell hole.” For the most part, we’re both pretty much still those kids, and I think we love that about one another.
Before taking the free Ward’s Island ferry back to the city, Shayla showed off her photography skills and snapped this gem where you can clearly see that I am just beaming about the perfect day we were having.
By the time we got on the ferry, I was turning into a hangry bear. So we trekked up Yonge Street to Spring Sushi in the 10 Dundas East building for an all-you-can-eat sushi feast. It had all come full circle when we remembered that we had dinner together there on our very first friend date. We talked about how much we had grown since then, as people and as friends. Then we proceeded to plan the rest of our summer plans together.
(Sorry for the bad food pics. Apparently I can’t manoeuvre a focus ring properly when I’m hungry, oops)
