As a hardcore Toronto Maple Leafs fan (yes, I’m writing this after a pair of losses, including a respectable 5-3 defeat to the red-hot Habs … ugh), I’ve collected an overwhelming array of navy blue clothing. Whether it was team gear, regular clothes, my own purchases, or gifts from family and friends who knew me too well, I had a ton of blue in my closet. Eventually, I had to train myself to stray from navy when shopping over the years as a way to introduce more colour variety to my wardrobe. But because of this shift, I gradually went from having almost all navy to almost no navy in my closet. Now it’s time to reshift and bring back this classic shade of blue.
Navy has definitely been making a comeback in our style world for the fall / winter season. Why? It’s a subtle refresh of our favourite cold-weather neutral, black. Navy is rich, elegant, and strong. It’s a blue that you can wear as a neutral or understated accent.
So to embrace the return of navy, I’m featuring two looks for you today with a couple new pieces I picked up from H&M.
Outfit 1 details: Blouse — H&M | Skirt — American Apparel | Ankle boots — Steve Madden “Neovista” in Taupe | Tote bag — Tory Burch | Ring — Rox ‘N’ Bunny | Watch — Michael Kors | Nail polish — Essie in “Chinchilly”
This button-down shirt has become my favourite top for the fall. I got it a couple sizes up so I could wear it slightly oversized for a comfortable fit with anything — leggings, jeggings, skirts, etc.
Also, blue + tan = no brainier, so I love the way this American Apparel tan sweater skirt brings the best out of the navy blouse. The white stripes help, too.
This look is in heavy work outfit rotation now and the compliments I received the first time I wore it is what told me that I definitely needed to do a post on it.
On to the next outfit…
I picked up these navy trousers from H&M after months of failed searches for work dress pants. Is it just me or has it really gotten trickier to find a good pair of dress pants? They’re almost never cut right anymore — too tight around the waist, too long around the ankles, too loose around the butt, too legging-like.
And then I had my jackpot moment when I found these perfect pants for $14.99 (regular price)! They have that lightweight, luxurious feel to them, yet they’re so comfortable that I almost feel guilty for wearing them to work. They have a high, elastic waist, so they’re great to wear with tucked-in tops or cropped sweaters, as shown above.
How are you rockin’ the navy this fall / winter season?
Special thanks to Jason for snapping these lovely shots, and driving us around until we found the perfect fall backdrop in this beautiful Rosedale neighborhood. Our teamwork, patience, and strategies paid off and we nailed those glowing-sun-in-my-hair shots that I had always wanted to pull off.
Hope you’re all having a great week!
