Spring has arrived but it’s been kind of a windy and chilly start to the season here in Toronto. However, even with nippy temperatures, you can still shift to a spring wardrobe thanks to some easy tips that I’ll be sharing with you today with this outfit.
Winter-to-spring transition step #1: Pop with pastels
If there’s a winter chill lingering in the air and you still want to bundle up in your dark, warm clothing, lighten up the look with pastel statement pieces. These light-coloured accessories can instantly freshen up any neutral clothing you have on, just like these pink cat-eye sunglasses I’m wearing with this outfit.
I bought these Kate Spade sunnies last summer and it was a dream purchase! I had always wanted a pair of pink, chunky, cat-eye sunglasses (as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a fan of retro ‘50s-‘60s style). It was the following conversation with the sales associate that sealed the deal for me when I was debating between two pairs.
Sales associate: “These ones certainly do make a statement, the other ones are more subtle and safe.”
Me: “Oh, that’s exactly what I want. I want to make a statement.”
Sales associate: *laughs* “Perfect! Those are the ones for you then.”
And hey, why not go big and make a statement? If you’re going to opt for pastel sunglasses, I suggest the chunkier the better, that way you get even more of a colour pop out of it.
Don’t want to commit to pastel accessories? How about a simple spring manicure? I went with lavender French tips for this look!
Winter-to-spring transition step #2: Glow with metallics
Metallics are underrated for brightening up your outfit for spring because they can be loud or clashy. But consider a pair of shiny shoes or a clutch when styling your transition outfits. With a metallic texture reflecting light (bonus if it’s got a colour tint to it), it can give any drab winter outfit a dose of spring glow.
Pairing these rose gold loafers and navy blue trousers together happened by accident as I was rushing out the door — don’t you love when that happens? But I’m glad it did as the metallic loafers elevated my outfit and served as my official welcome for the spring season when I first wore this look in early March. I picked up these rose gold loafers early last fall from Forever 21. I can’t remember the exact price but I think they were under $30.
Winter-to-spring transition step #3: Layer up!
So it’s March 31st and the air still has a bit of a bite to it but you’re just so bored of your chunky grey sweaters and winter coat. I feel you… and you feel sweaty. You know what I’m talking about: just the act alone of stepping off the train / streetcar, or hopping off your bike, or getting out of your car, or racewalking five short minutes to your office has got your pits and your back damp while you already have end-of-day work stank and it’s not even 10 a.m.
That means it’s time to ditch the winter wear. And I know, you wake up and it’s cold, you check the weather app on your phone and that tells you it’s cold, and your warm bed says “if you get up, you’ll be cold.”
But that’s where layers come in. Scale down to a spring jacket, wear a cardigan over looser, lighter, flowy fabrics, and wrap a big, comfy blanket scarf around you. You can add or subtract as you see fit throughout different points in the day, but the key here is you’ve shed yourself of your winter wardrobe weight and added a nice variety of textures to your look thanks to some simple layering.
Good work! Now you’re ready for spring :)

*** NEW INSTAGRAM: @brashbrilliant ***
Because haters are, apparently, going to hate, I’ve had to delete my old Instagram account and start fresh sans all that negativity. So please find my new account @brashbrilliant and give me a follow if you feel like it. I will be forever grateful!
While you’re there and if you’re a US resident, go ahead and enter my giveaway to kick off spring. You could win a one-year RocksBox and BirchBox subscription! Twelve months of jewelry and makeup will be given to one lucky winner, yay.
*** NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL ***
See above re: haters, but I’ve also had to give my newly created YouTube channel a reboot to purge some negative vibes. Yes, I’m a little heartbroken that my first video hit 13K views in one month, but I’ve had to re-upload it and it’s now back down to 300 — but that’s OK!
Will I ever hit 13K on a video again? Who knows. But thank you to everyone who watched this first video of mine and helped boost it up the search ranks in such a short time!
We’re starting fresh and I have a ton of new videos coming up including some spring makeup tutorials! So please subscribe if you’re into that and don’t want to miss any new uploads. Thanks!
Have a strong finish to the week, my friends! The weekend is just around the corner :)
